Is Daily Red Safe to Play?
Last updated
Daily Red at dailyred.app is an unofficial, fan-made Pokémon battle game that runs entirely in your web browser: there is nothing to download, no ROM, and no account. Your progress is saved only in your browser, and the site uses cookieless Plausible analytics.
Do you need a ROM or download?
No. Daily Red needs no ROM, no emulator and no download; you open dailyred.app and play. Battles are simulated in your browser by the open-source Pokémon Showdown battle engine (MIT licence), using Generation 3 rules.
That is different from the open-source GitHub project amoi-builds/dailyred, which builds a Pokémon FireRed ROM from the pret/pokefirered decompilation with patches and runs it in the browser through the mGBA emulator. Daily Red at dailyred.app was inspired by that project but is not affiliated with it and does not use its code.
What data does Daily Red store?
Daily Red stores your game data only in your browser's localStorage: today's battle progress (your chosen lead and moves), your results, your stats and streaks, and your animation-speed setting. It has no signup or login, so it never asks for your name or email.
- In your browser: keys starting with
dr4:for your lead, daily progress, results, stats and speed setting. Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes them. - Analytics: Plausible Analytics counts page views and a few anonymous game events (for example a battle starting). Plausible does not use cookies.
- Ads: no ad code runs today. The privacy page says it will be updated before any ads are added.
- Sprites are served from dailyred.app itself (originally from the PokeAPI sprites project).
Is Daily Red official?
No. Daily Red is an unofficial fan game. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK inc. or The Pokémon Company. Pokémon names are trademarks of their owners.
It is also not the GitHub project amoi-builds/dailyred. It was written separately and is not run by that project's author.
How to tell Daily Red sites apart
Several fan sites and projects use the name "Daily Red", so check the address bar and the footer. This site is dailyred.app; it plays in the browser with no ROM or download, and its footer states it is unofficial and links to its privacy page.
For any Daily Red site, these neutral checks help:
- Domain: confirm the exact URL you meant to visit.
- Downloads: a browser game should not need you to install an app or extension. Be careful with any site that asks you to download a file.
- ROMs: the GitHub project ships no ROM; it builds one from source. Don't download ROM files from unknown sites.
- Privacy page and disclaimer: look for a clear statement of what is stored and that the site is unofficial.
- Source: the original open-source project lives at github.com/amoi-builds/dailyred.
